Independent senatorial candidate Kiko Pangilinan’s topping the SWS survey may be due to his insistence on campaigning independent of the administration and the GO. I think his honest stance endears to both administration and opposition supporters.

Many people have been hoping for a “third force” and Kiko has shown them a good glimpse of it. Decent Filipinos see him as a lone crusader of sorts.

Another thing that’s going for Kiko is that he has helped a lot of local government units with his pork barrel. Still another factor is his being the husband of a well-loved celebrity, Sharon Cuneta.

But will Kiko eventually top the senatorial race? Or will it be any of those who want to be in Malacañang in 2010 – Loren Legarda, Manny Villar and Panfilo Lacson? To become a viable presidential candidate, one must be among the top three senatorial race winners.

To become a top contender, however, one must beat Sen. Mar Roxas’ record, topping the 2004 race with about 19 million votes. Many are already talking about Roxas’ prospects for the presidency in 2010. So the 2007 election is a prelude to a more interesting clash to come, and hopefully no Eraption would spoil the fun.

Actor and senatorial candidate Cesar Montano is thinking twice about his candidacy due to campaign problems but he is not backing out of the race, members of Team Unity revealed Tuesday.

“Because of the problems he is encountering, he is thinking twice…That is why we are, you know, working double time [to find out] what he needs and how we can help him because he is a valuable member of the Team Unity senatorial slate,” the group’s spokesman, Ace Durano, told DZMM. ALL three senatorial candidates who participated in today’s first of a series of debates sponsored by the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, agreed on one thing: Any proposal to amend the Constitution should be shelved for the next three years.

ANC’s Ricky Carandang bids goodbye to the candidates as the debate closes. Despite earlier setbacks, Malacañang has not abandoned its plans to push for a parliamentary form of government that will abolish the Senate to make way for a unicameral Parliament.

For now, the Senate will have at least three sure votes against charter-change in the next three years. That is, if Team Unity’s Edgardo Angara, Francis Escudero of the Genuine Opposition, and Oliver Lozano of the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan will all win this May. (More on Inside PCIJ)

MANILA, Philippines — The townhall meetings of TEAM Unity senatorial candidates will be modified for “bigger impact,” party officials said Tuesday.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said that starting next week, they would try a new strategy in which all 12 candidates would be present in one province and then spread out to conduct the “Pulong Sulong.”

“There’s bigger impact if they’re together,” said Durano. (More on Inquirer)

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections has been asked by a lawyer from the opposition for a list of the ballot boxes that had been destroyed in a fire at the old building of the Comelec in Manila.

The Comelec said Monday that among those that had been lost were those with pending election protest cases.

Opposition lawyer Sixto Brillantes, who went to the Comelec Tuesday to ask for a complete list, said that based on the one initially released to him, the ballot boxes that had been destroyed included those involving a protest case filed in 2004 by Jose Francis Yatco, who Brillantes said was the son-in-law of Chairman Benjamin Abalos, against Mayor Hermes Perez of Biñan town in Laguna province. MANILA, Philippines — First, there were “Tito, Greg, and Tessie.” And then they were gone.

This, according to former senator Vicente Sotto III, was what made him decide to leave the opposition to run under the administration’s TEAM Unity ticket — a move, he said that had been arranged by his new party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC). (More on Inquirer)

MANILA, Philippines — TEAM Unity is assessing the “additional needs” of one of its senatorial candidates amid reports that his camp had been complaining about the lack of funding for his candidacy, the party’s spokesman said Tuesday.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano evaded questions on whether actor Cesar Montano’s alleged gripes about money had basis, but said that the coalition was prepared to attend to this. (More on Inquirer)

MANILA, Philippines — If candidates can do it, election watchdogs can do it better — use jingles to court voters, that is.

Organizations have banded together to promote clean elections and they’re doing it using a song whose theme is: Voters should not sell their votes and they should vote with their conscience.

Groups that attended the Philippine Election Forum (PEF), a multi-pronged interagency effort to protect the electoral process, have come up with a jingle advocating a values-oriented vote among the millions-strong electorate that will troop to the polling precincts this May. (More on Inquirer)

MANILA, Philippines — Senatorial candidate Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said the Genuine Opposition (GO) would welcome with open arms Speaker Jose de Venecia and the remnants of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrat after the Kampi party of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo raided their ranks — should they decide to bolt the coalition.

“If the ranks of Lakas will be decimated by the poaching of Kampi, Speaker De Venecia is most welcome to join the Genuine Opposition,” Lacson said in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net. (More on Inquirer)
