MANILA, Philippines — Senatorial candidates of both the administration and the opposition Sunday held up the Social Weather Stations’ latest survey that gave the Senate the top net satisfaction rating among public offices as a vindication of their defiance to Malacañang’s numerous attempts to muzzle the upper chamber.
Senate President Manuel Villar, who is seeking another Senate term under the Genuine Opposition (GO) ticket, said the high approval ratings he, as Senate President, and the Senate got in the SWS survey showed the people did not want the Senate abolished as proposed by advocates of Charter change. ILOILO CITY — Militant party-list groups have filed a complaint before the Commission on Elections for the destruction of their campaign materials posted in designated areas in the city.
In a letter submitted to lawyer Elizabeth Doronilla, election officer of the province and city, Bayan Muna said its posters had been “sabotaged” in plazas in the districts of Jaro, La Paz and the city proper. (More on Inquirer)

DAVAO CITY — Environmentalists here have launched a campaign dubbed “green idols” to convince voters to select candidates who have environmental protection in their platform.
But Jesuit priest Albert Alejo, executive director of the Mindanawon Initiatives for Cultural Dialogue Center of the Ateneo de Davao University, said on Thursday that the campaign would not involve endorsing a particular candidate. (More on Inquirer)

KAPANGAN, BENGUET — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo did a little campaigning for her TEAM Unity’s senatorial candidates here on Monday but what might have won the people’s hearts was her commitment to end the region’s rugged and dusty roads.
Ms Arroyo, who decided to come by land to inaugurate the new town hall, looked tired and shaken when she emerged from her car after more than an hour’s trip from Baguio City. (More on Inquirer)

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate topped the first quarter Social Weather Stations (SWS) net satisfaction survey of top government institutions, with Senate President Manuel Villar logging in as the most popular public official.
The opposition-led Senate, which stonewalled a move by Malacañang and the House of Representatives to amend the Constitution last year, garnered 51 percent “satisfied” and 25 percent “dissatisfied” marks for a fairly good net rating of +26 during the survey period Feb. 24 to 27. (More on Inquirer)

MANILA, Philippines — Midway into the May election campaign, it is dismaying that the Genuine Opposition (GO) has not come up with an alternative policy with which to confront the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on two important issues — the economy and the increasingly dangerous tendency of the military to seize control of the national security agenda from a weak civilian government.
The new general manager of the opposition’s campaign, Sen. Sergio Osmeña III, formally took charge of the campaign only last week. All he said upon taking command was that “all the (GO senatorial) candidates will have a better chance of winning because I will treat all of them the same way.” (More on Inquirer)

MANILA, Philippines — Following much speculation about his political plans in the May 14 elections, former Manila Rep. Mark Jimenez will not join the crowded race for the mayoralty of Manila after all.

House Majority Leader Prospero Nograles proposed yesterday that the government regulate election surveys such as those that Pulse Asia and Social Weather Stations (SWS) now conduct regularly in the run-up to the May balloting.
Administration senatorial candidate Mike Defensor, on the other hand, suggested that “credible” media organizations should join Pulse Asia and SWS in conducting surveys. (More on Philippine Star)

After getting their fill of campaign promises, voters in the May polls are getting more of the other usual election fare – mudslinging.
Spokespersons of the Genuine Opposition and the pro-administration Team Unity have intensified their word war, as the public appeared to have heard enough of their campaign platform or what they passed off as one.
GO spokesman Adel Tamano accused the administration of cheating this early while Tonypet Albano, deputy spokesperson of TU, said the opposition remained “destructive and obstructionist,” complaining too much but not offering any solutions to the country’s problems. (More on Philippine Star)

Four days before the deadline for filing certificates of candidacy for local positions, the two biggest political parties of the administration coalition are fielding their respective candidates against each other.
A top administration official admitted the political rivalry between the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) and the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) could adversely affect the chances of Team Unity senatorial candidates who are relying heavily on the support of local officials in the delivery of votes.
