The Kabataang Liberal ng Pilipinas, the youth wing of the Liberal Party, with its partner, Student Leaders Forum (SLF) praised the Filipino youth for its active participation and interest in the just-concluded midterm elections last 14 May 2007.
“Aside from the many first-time voters who enthusiastically exercised their rights last May 14, we’re happy in the level of overall interest in the election among young people, particularly in the importance of the right to vote and what the youth can do to help safeguard the ballot,” Ace Gomez, SLF chairman, said.
Gomez pointed out that aside from casting their votes, many young people volunteered for electoral watchdogs like the National Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV).
Gomez also said that the large number of viewers of the blog put up by SLF as part of its voter’s education campaign showed that many young people were interested in the vote. The blog, www.getinvolved.wordpress.com, garnered more than 12,000 hits since it went up last 29 May 2007.
“We were very impressed with the traffic the blog was receiving,” Eric Caliboso, KALIPI executive director and project director for SLF’s info campaign, said. “We can only assume that young people were very interested in knowing about the elections, like more information on the candidates, what to do when casting one’s vote, and how to protect their votes.”
“Now that the elections is over, its time to tackle other important issues for the youth,” Caliboso added. He said that SLF, KALIPI, and its other partner organizations will now look into ways to reform the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and the promotion of blogging as a tool for issue advocacy campaigns (end).

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections, whether composed of the present commissioners or of new ones, should work double-time in the next three years, before the presidential elections in 2010, to make sure that the massive cheating that’s taking place is not repeated — ever again. With each election, the cheaters become more inventive, audacious, shameless, and often successful. Comelec proclaims Mendoza Bulacan governor-elect
Bulacan governor-elect Jon-Jon Mendoza told radio station dzRB that a political neophyte like him neither had the capability nor the machinery to commit electoral fraud as accused of him by his opponent, Roberto Pagdanganan.
Pagdanganan lost to Mendoza by 19,998 votes and sought to stop the proclamation of the governor-elect, accusing him of electoral fraud. The Commission on Elections, however, has proclaimed Mendoza the new Bulacan governor this evening.
Malacañang defended anew the election results in Maguindanao, which have stirred controversy because pro-administration senatorial candidates swept the top 12 slots in the province. (More on ABS-CBN)

MANILA, Philippines — To make up for its lack of poll watchers nationwide, the Genuine Opposition (GO) has entered into a post-election alliance with Bayan Muna (Nation First) and four other leftwing party-list groups to monitor the votes of its senatorial candidates for them.
Bayan Muna and affiliated party-list groups Anakpawis, Gabriela, Suara Bangsamoro and Kabataan had formed their own Task Force Poll Watch 2007 to conduct a parallel count of the party-list elections and guard their votes. (More on Inquirer)

Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. on Tuesday said that the Commission on Elections will be able to proclaim winners of the senatorial elections on Saturday.

Just like local election monitors, Lanao del Sur candidates who felt cheated are now rising up against local officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).According to Aga-Khan Mangondato Sharief, an independent candidate for board member in the province’s first district, he and other fellow board member candidates have agreed to pursue legal action against local Comelec officials for serious missteps that endangered their respective candidacies.
