Escudero, Pangilinan take lead in mock elections

Young lawmakers Francis Joseph “Chiz” Escudero and Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan continued to get the highest marks for election as Senator in the second installment of a poll-awareness campaign conducted by the Student Leaders’ Forum (SLF) held at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Sta. Mesa campus last 12 – 13 March 2007.

Escudero took the top spot with 490 votes from a turnout of 530. Meanwhile, independent candidate Senator Kiko Pangilinan got 420 votes to come in second to the leading figure of the Opposition.

The other ten slots were taken by Manny Villar, Loren Legarda, Ping Lacson, Allan Peter Cayetano, Joker Arroyo, Ralph Recto, Noynoy Aquino, Michael Defensor, Sonia Roco and John Osmeña.

“The results of the mock elections show us a very encouraging trend,” Ace Gomez, president of the SLF, said. “It just goes to show that the young have a different criterion when selecting their leaders.”

“Like with the mock elections we did in the University of the East, we see little in the way of celebrities in the lineup; indeed, the candidates the youth choose appears to be decided by issues rather than other factors,” Gomez added.

The mock elections is part of the SLF’s project called, “Get Involved: Exercise Your Right to Vote,” an information campaign aimed at raising awareness among the youth about the elections and those seeking public office.

The project is being done in coordination with the Kabataang Liberal ng Pilipinas (KALIPI), the Center for Liberal Leadership (CLL) and the National Students’ League (NSL).
