Team Unity bets edged closer to the commanding lead of Genuine Opposition (GO) candidates during the 4th leg of the Mock Elections being held by the Student Leaders Forum (SLF).

With 278 students of the De La Salle University (DLSU) at Taft Ave., Manila, casting their “votes”, four Team Unity bets managed to make it into the top 12, with Sen. Ed Angara squeezing into No. 13 as two GO bets tied for eighth place.

Leading the pack was Rep. Chiz Escudero, with 212 of 278 votes, or 76.26% of all votes cast. Sen. Kiko Pangilinan was in second with 196 votes (70.50%), followed by Sen. Joker Arroyo, Sen. Pres. Manny Villar, Sen. Ping Lacson, and former Sen. Loren Legarda.

The last six places were taken by Sen. Ralph Recto, Reps. Alan Peter Cayetano, Noynoy Aquino, and Miguel Zubiri, Fmr. Sen. Anna Coseteng, and Sec. Michael Defensor.

“We’re happy with the turnout, since it shows that interest in the elections is alive and well.” Pam Chua, Pres. of the Political Science and Development Studies Society (POLISCY) of DLSU, said. “But we’re happier with the way the votes turned out. These are national leaders getting chosen, and I think it’s a good gauge of what young people are looking for in those they want to lead the country.”

Ace Gomez, Chairman of the SLF, also praised the high turnout of DLSU students, and the quality of the vote, saying it reflected well on the mindset of young people when choosing their leaders.

“This is the fourth installment of our mock elections, and the trend has been encouraging.” Gomez said. “Young people are showing they’re not blinded by the glitz, glamour and hype of media celebrities and go for leaders with a known track record in issue advocacy and performance in public service.”

The Mock Elections is part of the voter’s campaign project of the SLF, done in cooperation with partner youth organizations in schools and communities, and with the National Student League (NSL), Center for Liberal Leadership (CLL) and Kabataang Liberal ng Pilpinas (KALIPI).
