The decision of the Comelec en banc to finally disqualify Cayetano becomes effective today, but not after two days of confusion regarding votes cast for “Cayetano.” The KBL bet has a namesake in the person of the Genuine Opposition’s Alan Peter Cayetano, who is ninth in the running for Senate seats as of the latest tally from the National Movement for Free Elections.

Last Friday, the Comelec in a resolution declared Joselito Pepito Cayetano of the KBL a nuisance candidate, but on election day itself, the Comelec said it still considered Joselito Pepito to be in the senatorial race and that ballots with only the surname “Cayetano” written would be considered stray votes.

Starting today, canvassers would no longer tally votes cast for Joselito Pepito, although Comelec chair Benjamin Abalos admits Cayetano could still file an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Namfrel will also turn its attention to the congressional race, which might come out together with or after the party-list update, according to the radio report. Both tallies, however, will come out within the day, though Namfrel could not say what time the reports will come out.
